who i am
i am a contemporary multimedia artist who lives and works on california’s central coast. as a child, my most pleasurable moments were spent at the kitchen table engaged in endless creative pursuits. my mother stella, an accomplished artist herself, never failed to provide me with scraps, crayons, markers, and ideas.
as a teenager, I turned away from art, only to find it again in my early 40s. in the midst of a painful and tumultuous divorce, as well as newly diagnosed breast cancer, i found myself powerfully, almost magically drawn to create again.
the bright colors and bold geometric shapes that have become recurring themes in my art reflect my optimistic (and hard won) attitude towards life; the textures and layers are a nod to its inherent complexities.
in recent years, my work has taken on new meaning as i have come to recognize the link between creative expression and emotional well-being. in my other life as a marriage and family therapist, i have had the opportunity to observe first hand life’s intricacies, and the hidden implications behind what is visibly presented.
my process begins with an awakening of inspiration that is either internally or externally triggered. once I feel “hooked,” either by an emotional connection, or simply an attraction to a particular color, paper, shape, or texture, my work takes on a life of its own, minus the unwanted intrusion of mental chatter. layer by layer, the spaces between the lines begin to unfold, reminding me of how important it is to succumb to the flow of life rather than to resist it. my active engagement in this process is a continual affirmation that life is to be lived as it comes.
